Preventing Injuries from Prolonged Sitting and Device Use

In today’s digital age, teenagers and adults spend a significant amount of time sitting and using devices such as smartphones, tablets, and computers. Prolonged sitting and improper use of devices can lead to various musculoskeletal issues. At All About Physiotherapy Performance Centre, we offer ergonomic tips to help our patients prevent injuries and maintain good posture. Let’s explore some effective ergonomic strategies!

Understanding the Impact of Prolonged Sitting and Device Use:

Prolonged sitting and poor ergonomics can lead to:

  • Neck and Shoulder Pain: Often caused by looking down at devices for extended periods.
  • Back Pain: Poor posture while sitting can strain the lower back.
  • Wrist and Hand Issues: Repetitive use of keyboards and touchscreens can lead to strain injuries.
  • Eye Strain: Excessive screen time can cause digital eye strain.

Ergonomic Tips for Teens:

  1. Maintain good posture

    1. Sit with your back straight and shoulders relaxed.
    2. Keep your feet flat on the floor and knees at a 90-degree angle.
    3. Use a chair with good lumbar support or place a cushion behind your lower back.
  2. Adjust Screen Height:

    1. Position your screen at eye level to avoid neck strain.
    2. Use a stand or stack of books to elevate your laptop or tablet to a comfortable height.
  3. Take regular breaks:

    1. Follow the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds to reduce eye strain.
    2. Stand up, stretch, and move around every 30 minutes to prevent stiffness and improve circulation.
  4. Use Ergonomic Accessories:

    1. Invest in ergonomic accessories such as a supportive chair, keyboard, and mouse.
    2. Use a separate keyboard and mouse for laptops to maintain a better posture.
  5. Practice Proper Typing Techniques:

    1. Keep your wrists in a neutral position, not bent up or down.
    2. Use a light touch when typing and take breaks to stretch your hands and fingers.
  6. Limit screen time:

    1. Reduce the amount of time spent on devices, especially before bedtime.
    2. Encourage other activities that don’t involve screens, such as outdoor play, reading, or hobbies.
  7. Eye Care:

    1. Adjust the brightness of your screen to match the lighting in the room.
    2. Use blue light filters or glasses to reduce digital eye strain.
