What is Orthopaedic Physiotherapy?

Orthopaedic (or ortho for short) physiotherapy is a branch of physiotherapy dedicated to diagnosing and treating injuries to bones, joints, muscles, and ligaments in the body. It is primarily dedicated to treating your musculoskeletal system. Here at All About Physiotherapy Performance Centre, our Orthopaedic Physiotherapists can treat a variety of musculoskeletal conditions, including:

  • Arthritis
  • Knee Instability
  • Joint Pain
  • Lower Back Pain
  • Lymphedema
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Scoliosis
  • Muscular Dystrophy
  • After surgeries such as hip replacement, knee replacement, rotator cuff repair, etc.
  • And much more!

What Are the Benefits of Orthopaedic Physiotherapy?

  • At All About Physiotherapy Performance Centre, our ortho physiotherapists will help you understand your injury, develop a recovery plan, and then meet your goals to get you back to what you love to do!
  • Ortho physios are experts at developing treatment plans so you know what you will need to do to get better.
  • Our ortho physios at All About Physiotherapy Performance Centre are experts in helping you reach your recovery goals.
  • Orthopaedic physiotherapists provide hands-on treatment to improve basic movements and provide the best possible relief of your pain.
  • At All About Physiotherapy Performance Centre, our orthopaedic physiotherapists cohesively explain and educate our patients as much as possible in understanding the nature of the injury and the effort/process of relieving pain and preventing further injury.

Orthopaedic Physiotherapy Will Help You Understand Your Injury

By carefully asking you what happened before you got injured, our orthopaedic physiotherapists at All About Physiotherapy Performance Centre will narrow down your possible injuries. Your injury story will give our physiotherapist clues as to what might be going on in your body so they can better focus their assessment. Questions they ask may include:

  • What were you doing when you first felt your pain?
  • Where do you feel your pain?
  • Can you describe your pain?
  • Is there anything that relieves your pain at the moment?
  • Are there any other conditions or activities that make you feel more pain?

Once our physiotherapist has a few clues, they will begin a physical examination of your injury. This physical examination will be hands-on by your physio so they can get a feel for exactly what is injured. This process will include:

  • Having you move your injured body part (to the best of your ability)
  • Feeling for any swelling, warmth, or pain
  • Feeling where there may be pain or discomfort
  • Having you move other body parts to determine where an injury or pain may be stemming from.

By carefully listening to your story and physically feeling your injury site, your physiotherapist will be able to identify what is going on in your body. Our physiotherapy team at All About Physiotherapy Performance Centre will provide you with a detailed plan for both in-clinic sessions as well as at-home exercises. We strive to relieve any pain or discomfort as well as strengthen the area of injury.

Ortho Physiotherapy Will Develop An Action Plan For You

Once you know what exactly your injury is, the next important step is to make a recovery plan.

Essentially, this recovery plan will be your roadmap to recovery.

At All About Physiotherapy Performance Centre, our highly experienced and educated professionals will provide you with a comprehensive overview of treatment plans and exercises. In some cases, determining exactly what treatments will be most effective or how long the recovery process may take can be difficult to estimate. However, our physiotherapy team at All About Physiotherapy Performance Centre may provide you with an estimate of recovery time as well as work that needs to be done by both the physiotherapist and the patient.

Orthopaedic Physiotherapy Will Provide Hands-on Treatment

Orthopaedic physiotherapists not only identify injuries but also are trained to provide treatment to provide relief and promote healing from injuries.

There are countless treatment options that ortho physiotherapists can employ, but they are all geared towards one goal – reducing your pain while promoting your healing!

Additional treatments we offer here at All About Physiotherapy Performance Centre include the following but are not limited to:

Acupuncture

  • Acupuncture originated as a treatment in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and dates back to as far as 100 BCE. It is the insertion of very thin needles through the skin to affect the nervous system. Acupuncture has been used for ages to relieve a variety of ailments.
    • At All About Physiotherapy Performance Centre in Etobicoke, we use Neurofunctional Acupuncture, also known as McMaster Medical Contemporary Acupuncture, to achieve even better results for our patients.
    • Neurofunctional Acupuncture uses TCM acupuncture points that specifically coincide with nerve pathways. Acupuncture needles are inserted to affect the nerves, and the tissues they innervate, at varying depths. The neurofunctional approach to assessment and treatment requires an understanding of the complexity of the nervous system.
    • However, what are the benefits of acupuncture? Acupuncture can help reduce pain, improve neuromotor control, increase local blood flow, and improve local metabolism.

Exercise Therapy

  • Exercise therapy is essentially a treatment plan conducted by a physiotherapist, which includes numerous ways of movement. It is a type of rehabilitation that treats injury and conditions using physical activity and movement.
    • Exercise therapy can be used in contrast with other types of therapy, such as massage therapychiropractic services, and more, all of which we offer here at All About Physiotherapy Performance Centre.
    • What are the benefits of Exercise Therapy? A few benefits can include reducing the risk of further injury, enhancing fitness and movement abilities, improving the overall function of the body and body systems, and much more!
    • Who can benefit from exercise therapy? At All About Physiotherapy Performance Centre, we believe that anyone at any age can benefit from exercise therapy! In fact, exercise may just be the best medicine for pain and injury!

Massage Therapy

  • Massage Therapy is the assessment and treatment of soft tissue and joints of the body due to physical dysfunction and pain. Registered Massage Therapists assess and treat physical dysfunction and pain of soft tissue and joints of the body, mostly by hands-on manipulation.
    • What to Expect During a Massage Therapy Treatment? At All About Physiotherapy Performance Centre in Etobicoke, your massage therapist will set up an individualized treatment plan which may include the following techniques: soft tissue manipulation (Swedish massage is the most commonly used technique) and cupping, remedial exercise programs, client education programs
  • Massage therapy helps to improve pain, swelling, circulation, flexibility, and joint mobility and helps to decrease stress.

Chiropractic Services

  • Chiropractors are primary healthcare professionals who have completed an extensive four-year Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) program at an accredited education and research facility.  They are exceptionally trained manual therapy practitioners who employ multi-faceted evidence-based approaches to assess and manage joint injuries, soft tissue injuries, sports and non-related sports injuries, pre & post-surgical rehabilitation, and biomechanical optimization as it relates to injury prevention and athletic performance.
    • Chiropractors work in a multi-disciplinary clinical setting that values the importance of evidence-based interdisciplinary care. Chiropractors often consult and work in conjunction with orthopaedic surgeons, sports medicine physicians, physiotherapists, massage therapists and strength/conditioning coaches to provide their patients with the most effective evidenced based care.

Electrical Muscle Stimulation

  •  At All About Physiotherapy Performance Centre and All About Kids Rehabilitation Centre, we often use an electrical muscle stimulation machine. This type of muscle stimulation uses high-frequency electrical impulses, which are sent to the targeted muscles.
    • Some benefits of electrical muscle stimulation can include the promotion of blood flow through the body as well as the strengthening of the muscles. It can be used to treat various conditions, such as spinal cord surgeries, muscle control issues, and many other conditions.
